Keithley Live: Exploring a 6-1/2 Digit DMM

Join our Keithley Expert Brad Odhner for a live exploration of the features of a 6-1/2 digit Digital Multimeter.

During this 1 hour review, we will go through 15 different measurement functions common to 6-1/2 digit DMMs: DC/AC Voltage, DC/AC Current, 2-wire/4-wire Ohms/Resistance, Continuity, Frequency, Period, Diode, Temperature, Capacitance, DC Voltage Ratio, and Digitize Current/Voltage.

Some of the examples we’ll look at include using:
· the DC Voltage Ratio function to measure power,
· the Diode function to check for failed components,
· the Capacitance function to determine the quality of cables,
· and more real tests for all 15 common measurement functions.

Along the way, we will also explore why 6-1/2 digits matter at all (why not 5?). We will also look at some advanced visualization tools like different ways of graphing, and even dip our toes into programming and scripting. If you would like, grab your DMM and follow along! 2-Port Shunt Through Impedance Measurement

Learn how to measure 2-Port shunt impedance on your (Voltage Regulator Module) VRM in this new video.

Power plane impedance is the most common power integrity assessment, and the 2-port shunt through method is the gold standard for that assessment. Sub-milliOhm power plane impedance is necessary to maintain power rail voltages within limits during large transient current demands.

Observing the Step Load Response of a Power Supply

After checking the gain and phase margin of a power supply control loop, observing the response of the supply to a step load change lets you watch the control loop in action. In this example, a pulse from the oscilloscope’s built-in function generator is input to an active current injector from Picotest to apply step changes to the demand on a power supply.
